Inclusive Cities Solidarity Communities

It is an initiative supported by the European Union through a strategic alliance between the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).

“Inclusive Cities, Communities of Solidarity” is a project that seeks to implement innovative actions from a perspective of care and protection for refugees and migrants, socioeconomic integration, migration governance and planning for inclusive urban development.

The project promotes an innovative urban-territorial approach that addresses existing vulnerabilities in a comprehensive manner and without exclusions, materializing the opportunities that the phenomenon of migration has in the medium and long term, for the construction of diverse and supportive communities, as well as more prosperous and inclusive cities, under the principles of the “right to the city” as a common good.

In this regard, the project transcends the context of humanitarian assistance and in turn generates a link with the integration factors of the refugee and migrant population with the vocation to remain in the host communities, with special attention to the potential and specific needs of women and people with disabilities.

The technical assistance provided by the three UN agencies and the European Union is intended to be a pilot with a multi-scale scope at three levels:

NATIONAL LEVEL: Supporting the strengthening of migration governance and state public policies for inclusion.

LOCAL LEVEL: Join local governments and support the generation of competencies at the city and metropolitan area level, in order to develop more prosperous cities.

INTRA-URBAN LEVEL: Promote comprehensive interventions in territorial polygons on an intra-urban scale, which accelerate socioeconomic integration, protection and access to rights for refugees and migrants, and host communities.
