Learning Day on Human Rights and Community Value brings together Local and Migrant Population in La Chorrera

In commemoration of Human Rights Day in the Panamanian city of La Chorrera on December 10 of 2023, the CICS project organized an enriching learning activity at the new Community Care and Development Center (CADC, per its acronym in spanish) in La Chorrera. The day, which coincided with the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, sought to promote the integration of the local, refugee and migrant population through pedagogical approaches aimed at children and adolescents.

The activity involved the participation of children and adolescents, divided into two groups according to their ages. Group 1, composed of children under 6 years of age, participated in a drawing session led by women from the the NGO ‘Organizacion Sin Fronteras’ and mothers. At the same time, group 2, made up of children over 6 years of age, was immersed in a day of learning in collaboration with ‘Organizacion Sin Fronteras’, IOM and UN-Habitat staff, and participated in a discussion about their rights, encouraging group dialogue and teamwork.

After the learning session, a dynamic sports game was carried out by the non-proft organization Futbol con Corazon (FCC, per its acronym in spanish), which included adults, children and adolescents, highlighting the importance of teamwork and rewarding the winners of each game. Thus, not only strengthening community ties, but also providing a safe and diverse space for interaction between the local and migrant population. In total, 50 people participated, including 17 Venezuelans, 26 Panamanians, 2 Nicaraguans and 3 Colombians, contributing to the CICS project’s goal of creating inclusive and supportive communities.
