Empowering Communities: Digital Literacy Workshop in Longdenville Addresses Xenophobia and Promotes Inclusion

In a concerted effort to combat xenophobia and promote the integration of Venezuelan refugees and migrants, The Living Water Community (LWC) implemented a series of initiatives as part of the UN-Habitat’s Territorial Intervention Plan. One of the key activities, a Digital Literacy Education workshop for parents and adults, recently took place in Longdenville, Chaguanas. The workshop, which lasted a day, aimed to empower participants with basic computer literacy skills and underscore the importance and usefulness of digital technology in today’s world.

The initiative was driven by the vision of supporting parent-to-child educational development within the community. Led by a qualified bilingual member of the Venezuelan human mobility community with expertise in Information Technology, the workshop successfully educated a total of eleven individuals. Among them were eight Venezuelan refugees and migrants and three Trinidadian nationals, including two newly trained facilitators from the Venezuelan community.

The course not only equipped nine participants with essential computer literacy skills but also empowered two additional members of the Venezuelan community to become Computer Literacy trainers within the LWC Education team. This strategic move contributes to the organic integration of Venezuelan migrants and refugees into the host community.

Looking ahead, the two trained facilitators will play a crucial role in providing ongoing assistance to parents seeking IT support at LWC’s office.  In the medium-term, the trained facilitators will offer support to parents, building their confidence and empowering them to contribute to their children’s educational development. Taking a step further, the long-term impact of the workshop is evident in the establishment of a digital presence for the participants. Through the simple yet significant step of creating an email address, individuals gain access to a crucial tool for job applications, enrollment in virtual education platforms, and various day-to-day activities in an increasingly technological world.
