A training on basic and fundamental knowledge on safe housing self-construction took place on 12 July 2023. In two sets of 16 hours, 30 beneficiaries (16 women and 14 men) from the town of La Playa participated in the workshop, guaranteeing the participation of refugees, migrants and host communities. Workshop participants had the opportunity to learn fundamental notions for the safe construction of their houses; they recognized the NSR-10 construction regulations, they acquired tools for soil identification: types of soils (clay, stone, mud), height, they learned about types of excavation and types of foundations: footings, floor beams, reinforcement, structures and retaining walls. The workshop ended with inputs and essential knowledge to distinguish the types of architectural roofs for homes and to clarify the correct techniques for a correct and safe installation of the roofs. The Techo Foundation played an active role in teh workshop.
“This is an essential activity for the community. Many people need training to be able to build their houses and this also gives them the chance to get a job in the construction sector. Most of the knowledge is empirical. With this workshop, they have more technical information and can develop their housing projects in a safer way,” said community leader Enrique Alvarez.
