The Mathare Environmental One Stop Youth Center, located in Mathare, one of the largest urban settlements in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, joined the IntegrHa-bitat network of centers, during the second UN-Habitat Assembly that took place from June 5 to 9, 2023 in the afore said city. Made up of young people mostly, the Mathare Environmental One Stop Youth Center works to improve the living conditions of the neighborhood’s inhabitants. It was founded in 1997 with the initial objective of attacking two strong problems that affect the community: the uncontrollable amount of garbage and the high youth unemployment. To attack these threats, the center created a waste management system that generated employment for young people, who worked removing garbage from the streets of the neighborhood. The center started with 15 members and there are 40 currently. In addition, it has a board of directors and it is estimated that around 200 children and adolescents are involved in the organization’s initiatives.
