On May 6, 7, 13, 14 and 20, 2023 a community muralism activity took place at El Harino neighborhood in La Chorrera, Panama, in order to artistically intervene a wall with an approximate extension of 45 linear meters, which currently divides the municipal swimming pool from the El Harino basketball court. This wall was selected due to its extension and its potential to revitalize this space, since it was in disuse and therefore it was optimal for the identity of the neighborhood to be reflected there. This activity was in charge of Geordan Espinosa, a Venezuelan muralist, and Ed Hernández Rodriguez, a Panamanian muralist, who guided the community participation process and also made the sketch that finally came to life. The sketch to make the mural was based on the ideas of approximately 70 refugee, migrant and host community girls and boys, who identified identity elements of La Chorrera such as dances and icons. These mural sessions also included the participation of elder adults and parents. They were also accompanied by recreational-sports sessions led by the Futbol con Corazon organization, which through the game educates about appreciating and caring for public spaces and promotes healthy coexistence. The mural was handed over on May 20 2023.
The activity had the support of the Mayor’s Office of La Chorrera and the community action board of the Balboa neighborhood, who made the wall available for intervention. Organization without Borders and Educational Centers encouraged the participation of students during the weekends. This activity allowed other young artists from La Chorrera to connect with each other and participate and give their contributions to finish the mural. This work is the pride of the chorreranos.
