On September 14, 2022, the Inclusive Cities forum For a Solidariy, Inclusive and Sustainable Santo Domingo, was held at the Crowne Plaza hotel in the Dominican capital city. The forum was a space for dialogue, exchange and incidence on the challenges and opportunities that Greater Santo Domingo has for the implementation of effective integration solutions for all its inhabitants, including the most vulnerable and those in a situation of human mobility. 90 attendees from national and local government organizations and entities, community and other organizations participated in the event, which was installed by various dignitaries, including María González, head of International Cooperation of the European Union; Franklin Rodriguez, senator from San Cristobal; Kelvin Cruz, president of the Federation of Dominican Municipalities FEDOMU; Gabriel Godoy from UNHCR, Josué Gastelbondo from IOM and Roi Chiti from UN-Habitat.
During the first panel, Development of inclusive cities based on the national land-use planning law: A comprehensive look at the benefits and challenges of local governments, it was addressed how to achieve effective territorial integration including vulnerable groups, as well as Colombia’s experience in the implementation of a territorial ordering law as a relevant instrument for integration.
Subsequently, the progress and challenges of Latin America and the Caribbean regarding the implementation of regulatory frameworks and territorial planning policies and their contribution to human mobility were discussed, a dissertation by Daniel Todtmann, director of architecture at the Universidad Nove de Julho from Sao Paulo.
The forum ended by highlighting the contributions of the academy to land use planning processes, sharing the case of the Partial Plan for Urban Renewal of the historic center of Boca Chica, exposed by students from the architecture faculty of the Central University of the East of Santo Domingo.
